About The Author: Anna Harriette Leonowens (1831-1915) was a travel writer, educator, and social activist of Anglo-Indian descent. She gained fame with her memoirs, including "The English Governess at the Siamese Court" (1870), which detailed her experiences teaching the children of King Mongkut in Siam (modern Thailand). Her story was fictionalized in Margaret Landon's novel "Anna and the King of Siam," which later inspired the famous musical "The King and I." Throughout her life, she traveled and taught in various countries, including Western Australia, Singapore, Penang, the United States, Canada, and Germany. In her later years, she focused on women's education, suffragism, and lectured on Sanskrit.
